NEW ADRENALINE AUTO INJECTORS NOW AVAILABLE FOR USE IN AUSTRALIA (ANAPEN®)

Anaphylaxis is a life-threatening allergic reaction which can be fatal within minutes. The main treatment of anaphylaxis is the swift administration of the drug adrenaline. People diagnosed with anaphylaxis often carry adrenaline in the form of an auto-injector to use if they start to develop symptoms.

The most commonly known brand name for an adrenaline auto-injector is Epipen®; however a new type of anaphylaxis pen, Anapen®, is now available for use in Australia, thus providing an alternative adrenaline injector for those who suffer from this dangerous medical condition.

it is important to be aware that Anapen®’s have a different delivery system. It is important for users to be aware of these differences. Here at FAST 4U we recommend that everyone who has anaphylaxis and all first aiders know how to use both devices. Book a course today by emailing us at info@fast4u.com.au or by phoning us on 0409 251 523. We are committed to assisting you with this important new training!

In the meantime, we outline, below, how to use an Anapen® adrenaline injector:

How to use an Anapen®

  1. Remove the Anapen® from its packaging. Check the expiry date.

  2. Remove the black needle cap at the base of the device by pulling gently outwards.

  3. Remove the grey safety cap from the top of the device to expose the red firing button. DO NOT PRESS IT YET!

  4. Hold the Anapen® firmly against the casualty’s outer thigh, ensuring the red firing button is facing away from the thigh.

  5. NOW press the red firing button. You will hear a click when the needle is injected. Hold in place for 3 seconds and then remove it from the casualty’s thigh. Note that when withdrawn from the casualty’s thigh, the Anapen®’s needle will be exposed!

  6. Reinsert the black needle cap to cover the exposed needle or tap down the protruding needle on a hard surface to avoid a needlestick injury.

  7. If the casualty does not respond or the signs and symptoms return after use of the first Anapen® and you have access to a second Anapen® you should give them a second injection. Record the time the Anapen®/Anapen®s is/are given.

REMINDER: Book a first aid course with us now by emailing us at info@fast4u.com.au or by phoning us on 0409 251 523 to learn and practise how to use both types of adrenaline auto-injectors.
